Labeled a genius from a very young age, Tesla Soldat seemed destined for great things. Not only was she adept with all things mechanical since before she could even remember, but she was born into the illustrious Soldat family. Headed by one Finneus Soldat, the galaxy’s foremost political mediator and diplomat, the family’s reputation far precedes it in all matters of government.
Tesla is considered the black sheep of the Soldat family, though, and with good reason. She has always been rebellious and uncouth, caring more for her studies and the company of her robot companion Bonaparte than the air of high society to which her family is accustomed. She’s thankful for all of her opportunities and experiences, make no mistake, but Tesla still feels that her father puts too much pressure on her to be a “good little girl” and doesn’t pay enough attention to her inherent strengths and interests.
An obvious prodigy, Tesla rocketed through primary schooling without stopping, graduating from high school at the age of fourteen. She immediately entered the most prestigious of Earth universities with a double major in cybernetics and robotics after a lengthy courting process from several schools. Tesla earned scholarships and grants for her work, choosing not to rely on her father’s money to get her where she wanted to be. The main contributor to the young woman’s scholarship money was none other than House Kazehara, who expressed an unfathomable interest in her brain and all its contents from the time she set foot in her first classroom. Tesla has never trusted the House, unable to pinpoint exactly why, but she eagerly took the money regardless of her feelings.
Nearly three years after entering college, Tesla is now stranded alongside a motley collection of allies, engaged in a fight for her life against a vaguely defined enemy. She was conscripted to accompany Arro Ceid and Janet Blackchurch on a mission relevant to the current economic and political crisis facing the world – orexite. Assailants took down their craft and forced Tesla and her companions to land on the undeveloped planet Arkova. Since then Tesla has been spirited from one locale to another, fighting against enemies both external and internal.
Tesla has recently learned that her father and mother were not her birth parents. The revelation came both as a shock and a relief; the former due to the shock her psyche suffered and the latter because she had always known something was amiss between her and her father. Now possessed of this knowledge and the means to use it against those who punished her unduly as a child, Tesla has gone from being her normal, energetic and sardonic self to being withdrawn and cold, avoiding contact with others save Bonaparte and her other creation, ASURA 004. Tesla feels as though she’s been betrayed, but in her mind she can’t seem to remember by whom. She only knows what she feels – that her mother who did this to her was a terrible person. Even then she can’t be sure she’s right.
Her current mental state aside, Tesla is usually the life of the party in any situation. Fiercely intelligent and prone to using that intellect as a weapon, the young woman is always ready with a sharp remark or a clever retort to those she feels are talking down to her in some way. Tesla is very aware of her age and its connotations, and as such she guards herself closely against individuals she feels aren’t taking her seriously enough. Deep down beneath the layers of snark lie a girl with easily hurt feelings who has always longed for friends of the non-material variety, but she hardly ever shows this to other people due to their initial reactions to and opinions of her. Tesla seems to be at constant odds with Arro, who she feels has seen her as nothing but a burden since they met. Tesla hardly gives the soldier a break only because she feels that he’ll never extend that courtesy to her. Despite protestations, Tesla has become rather good friends with Touna and Roth and has spent a good deal of time with them, showing them around modern society and helping them to acclimate themselves to the alien world in which they now find themselves. Tesla’s first love, however, is the plucky robot Bonaparte who follows her everywhere and sometimes lends a hand in hostile situations. The robot displays human behaviors resulting from a combination of Tesla’s programming and constant motherly doting over him. He is fiercely loyal to his creator, never leaving her side during her comatose episode and constantly seeing to her medical needs.
Tesla’s relationship to ASURA 004 is something entirely different. She sees him as something of a big brother to her, a role in her life that was never filled and, as she’s recently learned, was robbed from her by her own heretic mother. ASURA is as loyal to Tesla as Bonaparte is, and the young woman returns the favor at every opportunity.
